Vredehoek at a glance
Vredehoek lies on the slopes of Devil’s Peak, in the shadow of the three round towers that dominate the horizon. Loosely translated, Vredehoek means `peace corner’ and is a quiet and peaceful suburb although appealing to a few eccentrics. It is a very popular suburbs with DINKYs (dual income,no kids yet), younger buyers and students.
The neighbourhood has faced a revival with older apartment blocks being redeveloped into trendy apartments and an escalation in property prices during boom times. Vredehoek has some of the best views of the city, Table Bay, the V&A Waterfront and Table Mountain. Old Victorian homes with high ceiling and wooden floors, semi detachedhomes and big art deco apartments are all part of the attraction of Vredehoek.
There are many places to eat and to chill out. Some of the local favourites include Lazari, Upper Maynard Street, Bella Italia and Sidewalk Café in Derry Street, Deerpark Café in Deerpark Drive (very popular park for small children) and the newly established Conbrio right next door.
